As any of you who have frequented the NAMI office know, space is extremely cramped for so many people and in desperate need of some TLC. Since we own the building and cannot afford a bigger space, we need to utilize existing space optimally and make our work environment more pleasant for staff, volunteers and clients.
We recently received a small grant from TEP to help us get started on the improvements. We have been reaching out to businesses in the community for donations of materials and labor with a fair amount of success. To date we have received over $3,250 in grants and cash donations for our renovations and thousands in donated materials and labor. Although construction always takes longer than expected, especially in a circa 1950’s building, we hope to complete the project by the end of June and have an open house so you can all see the improvements!
The following businesses are already supporting us in this effort with: Temporary storage during construction, toilets, sink vanity, light fixtures, ceiling fan and LED bulbs, energy efficient windows, donated electrical and plumbing work, colored concrete, discounts and new bookcases for our library.
WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET!
We have set a fundraising goal of $10,000 to complete this project! We would appreciate any donation of skilled labor, volunteers, materials or cash to help us make our improvements a reality!
Any donated materials and/or skilled labor would be such a help! If you or anyone you know could help in this way please contact Christina Bickemann at (520) 622-5582 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Our Progress Thus Far
Our goals are to improve office aesthetics, storage and morale with a focus on energy and water efficiency and accessibility. The project started on January 7th and has been steadily moving forward.
Bathrooms– the old bathtub and fixtures have been removed, a 1.28 gpf toilet, pedestal sink and a new tile floor were installed. The main bathroom door has been replaced with a wider door, a partition wall added-behind which is a utility mop sink. Grab bars for wheelchair accessibility have been installed as well as a new window. Walls and ceiling were repaired and painted, the last thing is to install a mirror over the sink. The staff bathroom has a new 1.28 gpf toilet, sink vanity and storage cabinet. We will be installing a fan, mirror medicine cabinet and will complete the repairs to walls and painting over the next few weekends.
Conference room and 2 adjacent back offices– the suspended ceiling has been removed, structural improvements made and colored concrete floors have been poured-bringing all office floors to the same level. Electrical work and wiring was completed and recessed lighting and a ceiling fan installed. The sheet rock work and painting is complete. Four 8’ oak bookcases for the library were donated and we are currently getting the books back on the shelves. Three cabinets have been added to store brochures, office supplies and class materials. We could still use a 10-12’ conference table.
Heating and Cooling– Repairs have been made to system throughout the office and are now complete.
Energy efficient Lighting– Florescent bulbs throughout the office will be replaced with LED’s.
Energy efficient Windows– were donated for the entire office to replace old single pane windows, plus 2 added to conference room and adjacent office that were formerly windowless. The large picture window in the lobby, bathroom and interior office windows were replaced and we will be installing a few at a time on weekends until they are all in.
Offices: the last two carpeted offices have been tiled, extra doors between offices removed and we are now sheet rocking, patching and will be painting all remaining offices and the lobby on weekends. We have one more office to soundproof then the major construction will be complete.
Volunteer Needs: We can still use some help from volunteers with painting skills to help us finish painting inside and out. Any skilled labor to help install windows would be such a help! We are also looking for a landscape company and/or volunteers to clean up and improve the front landscaping and add gutters, swales and low-water use plants for rainwater harvesting.
