As any of you who have frequented the NAMI office know, space is extremely cramped for so many people and in desperate need of some TLC. Since we own the building and cannot afford a bigger space, we need to utilize existing space optimally and make our work environment more pleasant for staff, volunteers and clients.
We recently received a small grant from TEP to help us get started on the improvements. We have been reaching out to businesses in the community for donations of materials and labor with a fair amount of success. To date we have received over $3,250 in grants and cash donations for our renovations and thousands in donated materials and labor. We plan to have an open house on October 5th so you can all see the improvements!
The following businesses are already supporting us in this effort with: Temporary storage during construction, toilets, a sink vanity, bathroom cabinet, light fixtures, ceiling fan and LED bulbs, energy efficient windows, donated electrical and plumbing work, colored concrete, discounts, and oak bookcases for our library. We recently received a donation of framed artwork for the office and chairs for thelobby from former board member Anne Lettes, M.D. which really perked up the place!

Our Progress Thus Far
Our goals are to improve office aesthetics, storage and morale with a focus on energy and water efficiency and accessibility. The project started on January 7th and has been steadily moving forward.
To-Do Kitchen: We plan to move the hot water heater outside to make room for a fridge in the kitchen, we have received a tile donation for the counter top and back splash, we are just getting started on this phase. We have received a donated refrigerator and tile for the contertop and back splash. Front Porch: We are hoping to get some donations of materials (e.g. block) and labor to expand and screen the porch so that staff and clients who are less comfortable waiting inside have an outside space to enjoy in nice weather. Back Parking Lot: Asphalt repair and parking space striping. Volunteer Needs: We are looking for businesses or service groups to donate/install some rain gutters and window coverings for our new windows; and to clean up and improve the front landscaping. We would like to add some water harvesting by directing the gutters to planting areas. We could still use a 10-12' conference table. Ta-Da Bathrooms: The old bathtub and fixtures have been removed, a 1.28 gpf toilet, pedestal sink, cabinet, mirror, vanity light fixture and a new tile floor were installed. The main bathroom door has been replaced with a wider door, a partition wall added-behind which is a utility mop sink. Grab bars for accessibility have been installed as well as a new window. Walls and ceiling were repaired and painted. The staff bathroom has been painted and a new 1.28 gpf toilet, sink vanity, mirror medicine cabinet and storage cabinet installed.

Conference room and 2 adjacent back offices: The suspended ceiling has been removed, structural improvements made and colored concrete floors have been poured-bringing all office floors to the same level. Electrical work and wiring was completed and recessed lighting and a ceiling fan installed. The sheetrock work and painting is complete. Four 8’ oak bookcases for the library were donated and we are currently getting the books back on the shelves. Three cabinets have been added to store brochures, office supplies and class materials.

Heating and Cooling:Repairs have been made to the system throughout the office and are now complete. Energy efficient Lighting & Windows:New lighting in Conference Room. Windows were donated for the entire office to replace old single pane windows, plus 2 new windows were added to the conference room and adjacent office that were formerly windowless. The windows throughout the office are now all installed—the traffic noise is much quieter now! Offices: All offices and the lobby have been painted and our advocate office has been soundproofed for more privacy.
